Behind The Scenes: Meatcow Maker

Inital sketch of the cover concept

This computer sketch shows a good example of how art and story don't always mesh. From an artistic perspective, a spear piercing a scarf demonstrates action (a visual focal point) and allows for layering of elements (always a good layout tool). But the author assured me that the main character would never allow danger to befall this item. So, the final shows an undamaged scarf.

Nove, the main character, drawn with chalk pastel.
5
Other layout elements, the scarf and the moon, drawn with chalk pastel.
6
The dirt/rock foreground, painted with acrylic.
7
After all the elements were created, I assembled everything in Photoshop. I started with the landscape.
8
Next, I darkened the sky and added the ground.
9
I added the scarf and moon, plus faint stars in the sky.
