Behind The Scenes:
Mural at Staunton Montessori School

1
I approached the head of SMS about possibly painting a mural inside the school. She said, "Oh, there's this great spot outside . . . " I gulped. You mean, like where everyone can see it?!
6
Once I got over my fear, I presented this concept sketch.
7
When I came to school one morning and saw that the spot had been primed, I knew the hard work was about to begin.
4
I created an outline-only version of the image.
5
I put the image on my iPad and hooked it up to a projector.
1
I projected the image onto the side of the school and traced the lines.

Day one of painting.

Day two. This prompted many student comments like, "Oh, so you're going to paint a different color each day? Do pink tomorrow."
3
Day 3. I could only work until noon, because the sun crept around that right-hand corner and blazed super-hot.
3
Day 4. Starting the foreground.
3
Day 5. More detail in the bugs and letters.
3
Day 6. Final mural!
3
Comparing the painting to my reference sketch.
3
I used Valspar exterior house paints, so hopefully the color will last a long time.

My view as I painted each day.
